Math Corner with Ms. Laura
02.09.2009

One of the best things I remember about growing up was playing games at home with

my family. We played cards games, board games, guessing games, and imaginary games. Games teach sportsmanship, fair play, and many other skills, including math. They bonded us together as a family and made many wonderful memories that I still hold dear. I would suggest that you play games a couple of times a week. Find a variety of games including some that need math. As you play, talk about strategies needed to be successful and about winning and losing gracefully. One rule I loved was that the winner always was the one to clean up. It subtly taught us that with power comes responsibility.

When my girls were young, I found games in which the game was won only when everyone cooperated together. That made everyone a winner. Here is a web site that takes you to “Family Pastimes”. It makes all kinds of great games that use cooperation. It has the games separated into age groups. I hope you enjoy them.
